Ayoba! That’s South African for Fabulosity!

My adventure in scenic and breathtaking Cape Town had its roots in humanitarian efforts. My husband teamed up with UNEP and PUMA and was invited to South Africa to raise awareness for a number of issues central to African unity and Biodiversity. I was eager to join him to support these causes and also to absorb Cape Town’s historical and multicultural influences.

After checking into our hotel – the prestigious Mt. Nelson Hotel – we hit the streets in search of all things fabulous.

St. George’s Mall was a living, breathing showcase of the South Africa’s commitment to the arts. Bold and intensely visual displays created at the confluence of African, Asian and Indian cultures were represented in the blankets, bracelets, and other hand made crafts sold by local artists and craft people.

Our visit with to SOS Children’s Village in Cape Town was a highlight of our trip. SOS is the world’s largest charity for orphaned and abandoned children. Kids whose lives have been ravaged by AIDS, war torn communities and poverty are given a second chance at stability within the village. We were touched by their stories of struggle and triumph.

The following day, we were treated to a private Big 5 Safari on a game reserve beyond the majestic Du Toitskloof Pass. Led by our intrepid tour guide Thiago, we found ourselves a mere yards away from lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras and countless other regal creatures whose spirits and passions have inspired my designs for years.

At an in-store event at the Baby Phat store in Canal Walk Mall, we were mobbed by over 3,000 screaming fans. What an honor to meet and pose for pictures with every single one of them. My fans inspire me to no end; and I was especially excited about the custom-made crystallized soccer ball created in honor of the in-store and the World Cup. So fab!

What a treat to take in a World Cup soccer match!  That night at beautiful Cape Town Stadium, we cheered on Cameroon as they faced off against The Netherlands. Though our team lost, our spirits soared as high as Table Mountain as we united with almost 60,000 other exuberant soccer fans!

Cape Town’s legacy of civil rights came full circle for us as Djimon and I were invited to leave our handprints in a special canvas to commemorate the legacy of Nelson Mandela. What an honor!
