My parents listened to R&B, Jazz, the Blues, and Soul Music. I listened to Hip-Hop. My Father wore jeans with dress shoes, I wore baggy jeans and Air Jordans. See the Difference?

Now adays, We listen to Hip-Hop and our kids listen to Hip-Hop along with our similiar appreciation for some BET programming and Air Force Ones. We’ve the seen the Generation Gap disappear in 20-30 years, especially in the Minority Community. I say that to ask this, is that a good or a bad thing?

Do our 7 or 8 year olds need to hear Jay-Z’s ‘Aint No Nigga’ while we are in line at the Mickey D’s drive thru? Do I wanna hear ‘Teach ME How to Dougie’ while i get ready for work every morning, blasting out of my son’s room? The shared appreciation for Hip-Hop allows me to better understand that we come from different generations of Hip-Hop but…..Does it make it easier or harder to be a parent?
