Jennifer Hudson will be playing the dramatic role of Winnie Mandela in a film of the same name, revealing the woman she was under the controversial activist that everyone knew.
The movie is supposed to hit theaters on September 6, and also stars Terrence Howard, as … you know it – Nelson Mandela! Winnie and Nelson met at a political rally in 1957, and were married a year later.
Jennifer Hudson spoke to USA Today about growing up in Chicago, Illinois, and how she was never familiar Winnie before landing the role:
“I was an African-American girl, and I didn’t know about this person who had a huge impact on the world. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”
