Just a day after Sherry West testified that De’Marquise Elkins shot and killed her 13-month-old son, Antonio Santiago, in March, her own daughter is telling the court a different story.

Ashley Glassey, who has been vocal about her skepticism since the tragic shooting, testified on Wednesday that her mother’s account of what happened isn’t adding up.

According to West’s story, she was walking home from the post office with Antonio in the stroller when 18-year-old Elkins and another minor demanded she hand over money. After telling them she didn’t have any, Elkins allegedly shot her in the leg, then shot Antonio in the face.

But Glassey isn’t buying it.

Glassey said her mother called her at 8:30 p.m. the day of the shooting. West told her daughter two kids had come up to her and asked for money and then shot the baby and then her when she said she had none, Glassey said. When Glassey asked for more details, West changed the story to say she was shot first and the baby second, Glassey said.

Glassey’s grandmother had died the summer before and she had collected her grandmother’s life insurance policy to cover expenses, Glassey said. Her mother knew that and called to ask how fast Glassey thought it would take for her to get the payment from a life insurance policy she had taken out on the baby.

“The whole conversation just didn’t settle well with me,” Glassey said.

Glassey called the police to tell them her side after the shooting, but when they didn’t return her phone calls, she went straight to the media. After realizing what her daughter had done, West stopped speaking to her, straining their already strained relationship.

During her testimony on Tuesday, West denied her daughter’s allegations, saying she had taken out the $5,000 life insurance policy on the baby because he was sick and someone at the hospital mentioned the idea to her.

It’s hard to tell who the jury will believe, but we’ll keep you updated with the latest in this bizarre case.
