Hollywood did its thing this year. There were a sea of great films, a lot that surpassed expectation, and a few surprise hits as well. But with the good also comes the bad and boy, there has been a lot of bad.

This summer, quite a few movies have flopped and sadly, most of those flops were big budget bombs. Can’t win them all. Still, Hollywood made over $4 billion this summer, and the record setting year is only a glimpse of things to come.

While we prepare for the future, we’d like to look back at the movies that fizzled out this year. From After Earth to Smurfs 2, it was clear that even though Hollywood swung for the fences, they struck out… a lot.

Here are this summer’s flops.

The Lone Ranger: Johnny Depp managed to get Disney to pour $215 million into The Lone Ranger, but once it opened, the flick only managed to gross $88 million.

RIPD: A new Men In Black? Try again. R.I.P.D. cost $130 million to make and stumbled out of the box office only making $32 million.

Pacific Rim: This next flick was on the border. Idris Elba starred in Pacific Rim, a costly $190 million film, which only made $99 million. A lot of money for sure, but it’s still $90 million short of breaking even.

White House Down: WHD was probably hurt by the movie Olympus Has Fallen, which had an almost identical plot. When your movie cost $150 million, and you only bring home $72 million, it’s a problem.

After Earth: Will Smith, aliens, and a summer release, pure blockbuster, right? Wrong! After Earth ran up a budget of $130 million, but lost $70 million bucks, only making $60 milli.

Turbo: It’s not the end of the world, but when a family movie doesn’t break even, your next flick doesn’t get a Turbo boost to the bank. This animated tale ran up a tab of $135 million, but crossed the finish line with a $56 million loss.

Elysium: Elysium was supposed to star Eminem, but Matt Damon stepped in and did the thing. Unfortunately, the numbers domestically didn’t add up, only pulling in $71 million.

Smurfs 2: Smurfs 2 might have been about small blue people, but it didn’t have a small budget. This movie failed to break even and smurfed up at the box office, only pulling in a measly $63 million.
