On Tuesday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina police officer who is accused of shooting an unarmed Jonathan Ferrell will appear in court for the first time.

According to the Charlotte Observer:

Officer Randall Kerrick, who has been charged with manslaughter in the death of Jonathan Ferrell, is set for a 1:30 p.m. appearance in a Mecklenburg County courtroom.

The department, though they moved quickly to charge Kerrick with manslaughter, are tight-lipped about the details of the charges and the investigation. However, a source familiar with the investigation said a video camera from a patrol car captured some of the 24-year-old Ferrell’s encounter with Kerrick after he crashed his car and started seeking help from a neighbor, who in turn called the police.

It’s unclear if the autopsy report, which revealed the former Florida A&M University football player had been shot 10 times, will play a part in upping the charges, but Ferrell’s family is hoping to get answers.

The family’s attorney, Christopher Chestnut, said he spoke with police and believes Ferrell was not attacking or provoking officers to warrant the force (including being Tasered) he was given.

“He was running to them for help. He was not threatening anyone…We’re planning to get answers,” he said. “If that requires a lawsuit, then we will.”

We’ll keep you updated on the latest from Kerrick’s court appearance this afternoon.
