Nina Ricci Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014

At very long last, the most fashionable month on the calendar is close to a close…and it seems like the further we delve into the shallow depths of Fashion Weeks across the globe, the stranger the things that take place.

After kicking off in New York City during the first week of September, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week has made its presence known internationally from Paris to Milan, Madrid and back, but never, ever without incident.

While there is still plenty of time for us to expect that the unexpected will unleash on the catwalk, following topless protesters and step shows in lieu of fashion shows (you’re the man for that Mr. Owens!) we figured now was a suitable time to catch up on the wonderful world of randomness that is Fashion Month.

Rag & Bone Women's Collection - Front Row- Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2014

Anna Wintour and Russell Westbrook Became Besties:

Deciphering Vogue’s editorial agenda isn’t quite as complex as it may seem, just check who she’s kicking it with during Fashion Week. Once upon a time, the EIC was spotted chumming it up with Nicki Minaj, and her Vogue feature followed shortly after. This time around, she pegged NBA star Russell Westbrook as her seatmate at the Rag & Bone show during NYFW…then a rare occasion happened: Anna Wintour smiled. The rest is backorder issue history.

PETA’s Nude Models Protest NYFW at Lincoln Center:

Five nearly-naked models in heels and snake-print body paint surely made a scene when they departed from the whole tried and true flour and paint game. This time around, the activists enlisted the bodywork of 5 models, who were painted as lizards to protest the use of animal fur and hide in fashion designs. Naturally, the narcissists were narcissistic and carried on with their NYFW musings as per usual; a few naked lizard ladies are nothing out of the norm at Lincoln Center.

Nina Ricci’s Show Crashed by Topless Protester, Model Reacts:

With security as tight as the UN, it’s kind of unclear to us how this plan went off without a hitch, but when you’ve got something on your chest, you have to get it off by any means necessary, right? That was the case at Nina Ricci’s Spring / Summer 2014 show during Paris Fashion Week, where two topless women from the radical feminist group Femen descended on the runway, screaming and grabbing a model. The model, in fleeting brevity, claimed she punched the protester square in her nose. Video footage suggests otherwise. Oh, the frenzy.

Rick Owens Enlists The Help of Step Teams To Show His Collection:

‘Ask and you shall receive’ isn’t the typical attitude many are greeted with in the cold fashion world, but after years of grappling with issues of diversity in the industry and particularly on the runway, Rick Owens threw a wrench in the game with his latest show. The Paris-based designer flew in competitive steppers from the U.S. to wow the audience while performing in his SS14 collection. We’re here for ALL of it. But, alas, some people assumed the show was actually a mockery. Oh, hush.

The New York Times Declares Everyone Is Pretty Much Over Fashion Month:

Lincoln Center is no longer the prime location for the show. Nobody can decide if they want New York Fashion Week to have a new home. Vera Wang doesn’t like that they rush her out after her show is over. The designers are tired. The editors think it has lost exclusivity. Jewish holidays are compromised and street style sucks…and a whole bunch of other complaints that you can read here.

Black Supermodels Vowed to Boycott Brands Who Don’t Use Black Models:

Alas, Iman and a slew of other legendary black models were not here for any of the above – unless you were talking about adding more diverse models to the mix, as they announced a boycott of brands who do not use black models in their show. Sorry they’re not sorry!

Until next season, madness.
