Congress didn’t just shut down the government yesterday – they missed the deadline to reauthorize Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or welfare. The grant was originally scheduled to be reauthorized in 2010, but Congress extended it multiple times. The most recent extension was part of a continuing resolution passed in March that funded the government through the end of September 2013, so it expired Monday night along with all other government funding. So this happened. A group of conservative students at the University of Texas at Austin held a bake sale on campus (which sounds innocent enough) but they created their prices based off of customers’ race in an attempt to show why affirmative action was a terrible policy. Instead, the sign and everything it stood for ended up being a terrible mess. [HuffPost]

An elderly man at a Chicago nursing home died after he caught fire on Tuesday. Michael Lewis was smoking a cigarette when the lighter in his pocket caught his shirt on fire. In the shocking video above, you can see staffers scramble frantically to help him, but after spraying him with the extinguisher, they left his smoldering body outside.
