The man who set himself on fire at the National Mall in Washington D.C. last week has finally been identified.

John Constantino of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, gave the Capitol building a military salute and ignited his fuel-logged clothes, setting a ferocious blaze that a few Good Samaritans tried to put out. He was airlifted to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, but a few days later he died from his burns.

The entire incident lasted only a few minutes.

Authorities are still investigating what the 64-year-old’s motives were, especially in the wake of a government shutdown and a shooting/high-speed car chase that took place just a day before his self immolation.

“…Lieutenant Pamela Smith said she was unaware that he carried any signs or had articulated a cause.

Witness Katy Scheflen said she saw a tripod up near the man but that she did not hear him say anything intelligible before he set himself on fire.

It was also unclear if the man was filming the incident.”

We’ll keep you updated on any developments in this investigation.
