As the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) continues their investigation into what caused the deadly Metro-North Railroad train accident on Sunday, the identities of those who lost their lives have been released.
James Lovell, 58, Donna Smith, 54, Ahn Kisook, 35 and James Ferrari, 59, were all killed when the train derailed on its way into Manhattan from the Bronx. Another 68 people were injured in the derailment.
James Lovell, from Cold Spring, Putnam County, was a loving father of four and husband to Nancy Montgomery, a local councilwoman. He was a screenwriter and an audio technician who was on his way to work on the Rockefeller Christmas tree lighting in Manhattan. His son called his death an “awful” nightmare.
“Word(s) can’t express how much my father meant to me,” Finn Lovell wrote on Twitter. “It’s safe to say he molded me into the man I am today. I love you and miss you. I can’t believe you’re gone. This feels like an awful nightmare that I can’t wake up from.”
Ahn Kisook of Woodside had just moved to the U.S. from Korea a year ago. The nurse, who practiced in Brooklyn, had worked the night shift. Her roommate, Hannah Jung Heejung, spoke out about the death of her friend.
“I’m stunned,” she said. “I’m really shocked right now. She was so nice. ”
Donna Smith and her sister Linda (pictured here on the right) were on their way to see Linda perform in a choral group. Donna, who is originally from upstate Newburgh, died in the accident. Linda was able to walk away.
A neighbor told the NY Daily News that the two were inseparable.
“They were like best friends and sisters. … They did everything together,” the neighbor said.
James Ferrari’s family and friends have asked for privacy during this difficult time.
“As of right now, the family would like to keep quiet and mourn his life,” said a family friend.
We send our condolences to those who have lost loved ones in this tragic accident and we wish the others who were injured a speedy recovery. An investigation into what caused the train to malfunction is currently underway.
