So this happened and it’s pissing a bunch of people off.

Giant grocery store released this ad welcoming back Howard University students from winter break, using a young white female to represent the mostly African-American demographic of the historically black college.

Obviously, the photo isn’t representative of the students that actually go to Howard. And not surprisingly, there was some criticism of the ad circulating on campus and the internet.

“Unfortunately an incorrect stock photo was used in the ad and we apologize for this oversight,” Jamie Miller, spokesman for Giant said. “We wish all Howard University students a successful semester.” It’s unclear whether those circulars are still available in the store.

But if you’ve ever been to the swanky City Market at O location in Washington, D.C. (you can order a glass of wine while you shop!!), you’ll understand that gentrification is changing the demographic of the iconic area.

Which means, Giant may not have been completely off target. Sadly.
