J. Cole recently celebrated his 29th birthday.

To commemorate the occasion, the rapper held a concert at the Theater in Madison Square Garden, where, midway through, Jay Z hopped on stage and handed Cole World one of the most iconic chains ever: the original Roc-A-Fella chain.

It doesn’t get more legendary than that chain, which has been around ever since the label’s early days, back in the mid ’90s.

Jewelry is very important to hip-hop: in the ’80s, when Run-D.M.C. first appeared on the scene, the huge dookie chains completed their look, along with the Kangol hats and adidas sneakers.

The idea of a rapper wearing a chain has never stopped being important to hip-hop.

From Rakim’s dookie chain to The Notorious B.I.G.’s Jesus piece to Rick Ross’ crazy chain of himself, here are 15 iconic chains in hip-hop.
