Google attempted to pay tribute to Harriet Tubman in honor of Black History Month last weekend – unfortunately their efforts were not well received by everyone.
On February 1st, Google featured a doodle of Tubman carrying a lantern in place of their usual ‘O.’ Upon seeing the image, television personality Nick Cannon took to Instagram to share his outrage:
“Really Google? This is the way we are kicking off Black History Month #UndergroundSearchEngine #WhoApprovedThis #WhySheRockingALouieVscarf #AmIJustBeingSensitive #FeelingSomeTypeOfWay #RacistMuch,” he wrote.
Google later removed the image, but according to TMZ, it had nothing to do with the backlash Cannon’s post generated. In fact, sources say the image was up for 24 hours, just like any other tribute they’ve done.
