Want more proof teenagers are actually the worst?
Look no further than Oregon, where a 19-year-old caused a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 26 after deciding to hold his breath while driving — a stunt that caused him to faint and injure four people.
The three-vehicle crash in a tunnel on U.S. 26 west of Manning happened about 4:45 p.m. Sunday. Oregon State Police said that Daniel J. Calhoon, 19 of Snohomish, Wash., was headed west in a 1990 Toyota Camry near milepost 40 when he told police he decided to hold his breath entering a tunnel. He fainted, causing the Camry to cross the centerline. The Camry collided head-on with an eastbound 2013 Ford Explorer. Both vehicles then smashed into the interior tunnel walls and a third vehicle, a 1999 GMC pickup, hit the Camry.
Calhoon and his passenger, Bradley Meyring, 19 of Edmonds, Wash., were taken by ground ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. Meyring was listed in serious condition on Monday; Calhoon was not listed as being at Legacy.
The driver of the Ford Explorer and his passenger were transported to Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. They were released from the hospital shortly after. The two people in the pickup were not injured.
And Calhoon, who clearly still believes in the childhood superstition that holding your breath in a tunnel will ensure a wish comes true, was cited for reckless driving, recklessly endangering three other people, and assault.
We’re sure, however, that was not his wish.
