Emma Czornobaj’s good deed has earned her life in prison. In 2011, Czornobaj stopped on the side of the highway to steer a group of ducks to safety, when a motorcyclist and his 16-year-old daughter smashed into her car. The teen’s father died on the side of the road, while the teen was pinned under Czornobaj’s car. She later died at the hospital. The jury convicted the 25-year-old, charging her with two counts of criminal negligence causing death, which is a maximum life sentence, and two counts of dangerous driving causing death, which includes a maximum of 14 years in jail. [USA Today

So this happened. In order for people to “engage with their lord and savior,” a church auctioned off two rifles during a Father’s Day celebration. The Joplin, Missouri church left many people puzzled with a Facebook Ad that reads: “Want to win a Black Rain AR-15?  Dads, you earn an entry for yourself, each child you have and if you bring your dad to church. Those that registered last week get to register again!!! Don’t miss this.” [Think Progress

Kids do the darndest things. A French boy was discovered by police after he faked his own kidnapping so he could avoid the dentist. The 12-year-old caused the police to investigate the kidnapping for a month as he gave details on his alleged ‘kidnapper’s’ appearance, home, and demeanor. After police noticed a lot of the details weren’t lining up, he confessed that he made the whole thing up so he wouldn’t have to go to the dentist. [NY Daily News

An audit has shown that over 100 women were illegally sterilized in California prisons. The audit was requested by the California Legislative Women’s Caucus. Between 2005-2006 and 2012-2013, over 144 tube-tying or bilateral tubal ligations were performed in California prisons. Thirty nine of the 144 didn’t give consent to the procedure and many did not have a witness present while the procedure was performed. All the inmates who had the surgery had at least one previous stay in jail on their records. [Think Progress
