You rarely get famous without catching at least one lawsuit. The Weeknd is no different.
“The Hills” is currently The Weeknd’s biggest hit at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. As of yesterday, it’s the source of a new headache. The Toronto crooner is being sued for copyright infringement. Cutting Edge Music Limited claims that the Illangelo-produced beat illegally sampled from the soundtrack to the 2013 sci-fi film, The Machine.
The lawsuit apparently has very damning evidence. It claims that Emmanuel “Million Dollar Mano” Nickerson, one of the song’s writers, direct messaged Tom Raybould, who scored The Machine, on Twitter and said that it might make it on Beauty Behind The Madness. The message allegedly said, “I sampled your music might make it 2 the weeknd next album. Huge fan of what u did 4 the machine movie!”
While “The Hills” is getting the heat, “Can’t Feel My Face” is getting the acclaim. Beauty Behind The Madness‘s lead single is up for Grammy awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. “Earned It” is up for Best R&B Song, Best R&B Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media.
