15-year-old Anthony Lane Jr. was taken off life support after an apparent accidental shooting involving a 7-year-old family friend in Florida, his family confirmed.

STORY: HE HAS A NAME: Devin Mitchell, Star High School Football Player, Shot Dead

Anthony was shot Sunday evening at a home in the 100 block of Deacon Jones Boulevard and today Anthony’s mother said they decided to take him off life support when they found out he was brain dead.

According to police, Anthony was shot after a gun fell out of his pocket and the 7-year-old, described as a special needs child, picked it up.

Anthony’s father, Anthony Lane. Sr, said he doesn’t believe the story police are telling him saying:

“That’s impossible. I think it’s a lie. My son can’t tell me now. So I need somebody to tell me, to step up to me as a man and let me know exactly what went on in that house with my son.”

He thinks one of the adults in the house is actually responsible.

Anthony Sr. continued telling Orlando Local news 6:

“If it was an accident, then I accept it as an accident. But all this covering up, it’s not making the situation no better.”

Tasha Holden, one of the adults at the home where the shooting occurred, said no one is covering anything up.

“It was really an accident, the gun fell out, the baby cousin picked it up to give it to him and it went off. We love him and we’re going to miss him and we’re very sorry.”

Family members said Lane and the 7-year-old referred to each other as cousins because their families are so close.

The owner of the gun is not known, and police continue to investigate the shooting.

If this incident doesn’t send a clear message that we need to have a serious discussion on gun control, then we don’t know what will.
