We’ve seen art with skateboards before, but what Japanese artist Haroshi has done is nothing short of amazing.

With the help of Bay Area-based skateboard distributor DLX Distribution and also in collaboration with HUF, the artist has salvaged and hand-carved stacks of used skateboard decks into extraordinary three-dimensional wooden sculptures.

In honor of this collaboration, HUF and DLX sent Haroshi hundreds of used skateboard decks skated by specific DLX team riders. Drawing upon his philosophy that there is a significant relationship between the skateboarder and his skateboard, Haroshi has transformed the very decks skated by these DLX team riders into one-of-a-kind sculptures representative of the skaters themselves.

The surprisingly life-like three-dimensional sculptures are all made from used decks that are now being recycled and turned into polished art.

When it comes to “going green” in the art world, making something new out of something old is as close as it gets.

Take a look at the Haroshi’s finished products in the gallery above, and take a look at the two behind the scenes videos of the project in the videos below.
