American born, France-based actor Johnny Depp has apologized over his rape remarks in the latest issue of Vanity Fair.

Depp was profiled in by his old friend and his son’s Godfather Nick Tosches in London and was asked,

How can someone who seems to have had his picture on every magazine cover in the world seven times over be so antagonistic to having his picture taken?

Depp’s reply?

“Well, you just feel like you’re being raped somehow…Raped. The whole thing. It feels like a kind of weird-just weird, man. Weird. Like you meet people and they say, ‘Can I have a picture with you?’ and that’s great. That’s fine. That’s not a problem. But whenever you have a photo shoot or something like that, it’s like- you just feel dumb. It’s just so stupid.”

Readers, critics and activists alike cried foul and Depp immediately retracted his statement:

“It was a poor choice of words on my part in an effort to explain a feeling,” he said in the statement. “I understand there is no comparison and I am very regretful.”

Depp was photographed for the issue by celebrated photographer Terry Richardson in London and their session didn’t go smoothly either. In fact, it had to be rescheduled to another day. According to Tosches, it took four hours to resolve the situation.

Vanity Fair is on newsstand now; The Rum Diary, Depp’s latest film based on the Hunter S. Thompson novel, hits theatres on October 28.
