Erykah, Erykah, Erykah. Man, there’s just something about Erykah Badu.
Don’t know if it’s her energy or her spirit, her mesmerizing eyes or her deep soul, but whatever mysterious qualities Erykah Badu possesses, they’re magical.
Over the past year, Kendrick Lamar has expressed his desire to creatively work with the legendary soul singer, and at this year’s BET Awards, he finally got his wish. The unlikely pairing teamed up to perform Kendrick’s GKMC banger “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe,” and of course, Erykah killed it (in a good way).
Shortly after their performance, rumors began to swirl that the two artists were romantically seeing each other (both denied those allegations), but after hearing Kendrick’s “Control” verse, he must’ve picked up on Miss Badu’s infectious spirit.
In an interview about her effect on men, Erykah once replied:
“I learned just as much from them as they learned from me. I’m a cold motherf*cka though. But the people I’m with are cold too, they’re a reflection of that. Become a cold motherf*cka and the motherf*cka will just come like magnets.”
Erykah has also joked that she gifts all the rappers she’s been involved with a pair of crochet pants or an Italian man purse. Didn’t Kendrick say he was ditching the name brands for white t-shirts and Nike Cortez’s?
Hey, it’s not crochet pants and dashikis, but it’s close enough.
In no way are we saying Kendrick Lamar and Erykah had some kind of romantic relationship, but it’s quite possible the two shared some kind of kinetic energy while performing with each other at this year’s BET Awards, because Kendrick’s “Control” verse is beyond cold.
We did a little digging on Miss Badu and this is the effect she’s had on previous rappers she’s encountered over the years…
Erykah and Andre 3000
Met: Sometime back in 1995 at a New York City nightclub.
The Story: According to close friends, Erykah and Andre fell in love very quickly, but according to Erykah’s own account of how she met Andre 3000:
“Two years earlier I met André at the club and they played my song “On and On.” Two years later, Februrary 7th , “On and On” came out on the radio. February 11th , I got pregnant.”
The Effect: During the time Andre met Erykah, the Atlanta rapper was in the process of finding his true self. With the help of Erykah, Andre 3000 made a smooth transition into the man he is today. Ditching the Atlanta Braves jerseys and baggy jeans, Andre found peace in more eclectic fashion choices and experimenting with his musical sound. It’s also rumored that his breakup with Erykah inspired him to record Outkast’s smash record “Ms. Jackson.”
The Breakup: Erykah Badu maintains that she and Andre 3000 didn’t break up over cheating. Instead, things just didn’t work out.
“No. Infidelity is not a deal-breaker for me. We’re all born sexual beings. I myself am not someone with a very high libido. I don’t require sex for happiness – I need companionship. I need a partner I can depend on, that I can love and grow with. But I do understand the nature of these men I’ve been with, and men in general. They have a need to chase.”
Erykah and Common
Met: Erykah and Common were a couple from 2000-2002.
Common went from this:
His collaboration with Erykah Badu on “Love Of My Life (Ode To Hip-Hop)” earned him his very first Grammy. Common also admitted that Erykah Badu was his first love and his first heartbreak.
“My open letter to Erykah is a chapter in my life that resonates with me. It was a time of reflection. I learned a lot about Rashid Lynn when I was with Erykah. During our relationship, I often chose to think, I’ll chill and let other people get their way, because that’s just who I was in all of my relationships with friends and family. I’d choose to take a [backseat], and getting to see that in myself while she and I were together was enlightening. I eventually realized I don’t need to be that person. I learned to speak my mind and be the man I’m supposed to be. It was a release.”
The Breakup: According to Common, Erykah Badu broke up with him over the phone. Common recalls Erykah calling him, saying:
“Hey, I don’t wanna be in this relationship no more. I’m liking somebody else.”
He went on to say:
“It [relationship] taught me a lot of things, and when it happened I kinda really got into myself and really learned about myself and I was able to move on, and now me and E are real cool.”
Erykah and The D.O.C.
Met: No confirmed date, but the couple’s daughter Puma was born in the Summer of 2004.
The Effect: The D.O.C. is most notable for working alongside Dr. Dre and his role in one of the most notable hip-hop collectives N.W.A.
He went from this:
On his relationship with Erykah, The D.O.C. states:
“It’s no confusion. That’s my baby. I love Erykah, Erykah loves me. She is the perfect mother to my daughter Puma, who I am in love with, and that’s all that really matters to me…I’m as married to Erykah as I’m gonna get. I don’t need no rings to love her. I love Erykah and I know she loves me and we are both in love with that baby girl, and that’s what it’s really all about.”
The Breakup: The reason behind Erykah and D.O.C’s breakup still remains somewhat of a mystery, but the two artists co-parent their beautiful daughter Puma (pictured above), and obviously, The D.O.C. still has a lot of love for Erykah.
Erykah and Jay Electronica
Met: Being the private person she is, no one really knows when Erykah and Jay Electronica first started dating, but their daughter Mars was born in February 2009.
The Effect: Most hip-hop heads have been patiently waiting for a full length Jay Electronica album for years now, but the elusive rapper can’t seem to relinquish his creative control to put out a project.
Instead, Jay Electronica drunk tweets about his ex-lover on Twitter:
The Breakup: No one knows when or why Erykah and Jay broke up, but back in 2010, she once tweeted:
“4 the record @jayelectronica & I been broke up.at least 3 yrs now.just thought his quote was brilliant & wanted to share it.. #badulovestories”
