Born in the Bronx, New York, Cullen and his family moved to New Jersey when he was just a youngin’. As a black Olympic swimmer, Cullen smashed a multitude of stereotypes, but his first encounter with the water wasn’t a good one.
Cullen actually learned to swim after a tragic mishap at a water park almost cost him his life when he was just 5 years old. Since then, aside from winning medals, the swimmer has made it his duty to urge parents to teach their children how to swim.
