31-year-old Rudy Eugene has been identified as the naked man who was shot and killed by police after they found him chewing off another’s man face on the MacArthur Causeway in Miami.
According to News 7, Eugene was high on LSD when he was found by bicyclist Larry Vega on the Causeway. Vega said he saw the two men, who police say appeared to be homeless, lying side by side on the ground.
Vega told News 7 that:
"It was just a blob of blood...You couldn't really see, it was just blood all over the place."
Rescue crews rushed the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital with 75 percent of his face missing, including an eye, his ears and lips.
Police say the attacker was likely overdosing on a new potent form of LSD.
According to Armando Aguilar of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police:
"What's happening is whenever we see that a person has taken all of his clothes off and has become violent, it's indicative of this excited delirium that's caused by overdose of drugs…What's happening is, inside their body their organs are burning up alive."
Eugene's ex-wife told WPLG 10, that she divorced him after a year-and-a-half of marriage because he was violent with her. The station was the first to report Eugene's identity.
Between 2004 and 2009, he was arrested seven times on mostly misdemeanor charges including one for battery and four for pot possession. He had no arrests in the past three years.
The victim remains in critical condition, while hospital staff say that the injuries the victim sustained are some of the worst injuries they have ever seen.
