The President told reporters that he was aware of the case and is following it, saying:

“This is a tragedy. I can only imagine what these parents are going through. When I think about this boy I think about my own kids. It is absolutely imperative that we investigate this.”

When asked about the Justice Department’s investigation on the case, Obama said:

“I am glad that not only is the Justice Dept. looking into this, but the Gov. of the state of Florida has put together a task force.”

As for the parents of Trayvon, the President expressed his deepest condolences saying,

“But my main message is to the parents of Trayvon Martin. You know, if I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon. All of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves.”
