Wiz Khalifa recently received the title of Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010 on Sunday at MTV2’s Sucker Free Summit. The summit aimed to curate a raw conversation and assessment of the trends that really matter to the hip-hop community. By purveying some sort of recognition for trailblazing these trends through a fan fueled competition, MTV2 brought together a slew of industry tastemakers including music journalists, bloggers and DJs to lead the conversation and ultimately choose the contestants. Other categories included Club Banger of the Year, Remix of the Year, Instant Classic, Guerilla Video of the Year, Mixtape of the Year, The People’s Crown, Who’s Got Next and Verse of the Year.

The results of the competition threw quite a few for a loop as most had pegged the leading lady of Young Money, Nicki Minaj, as winning the title. Over 200,000 viewers and readers voted online via MTV. Wiz Khalifa also beat out J.Cole, Diggy Simmons and Travis Porter for the title.

Wiz Khalifa winning a fan-driven competition isn’t surprising because the young emcee from Pittsburgh, PA definitely has a considerably larger cult following than any other contender for the title.  Wiz and his Taylor Gang pulled in over 66,000 votes after all in comparison to Nicki Minaj’s 30,000+ votes. What is surprising is that Wiz is probably the only one of the five finalists that made it without any heavy co-signs from any industry veterans or big names behind him. Clearly, it’s Taylor Gang or die!

It was back in 2005 when Wiz Khalifa first made his debut in the rap scene. He released the mixtape Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania and received enough attention that he signed to Warner Bros. Records and was able release his debut album, Show and Prove, the next year. He actually made a bit of noise in the dance and electro, with his single ‘Say Yeah’ getting remixed by hit dance DJ Girl Talk and reaching the Top 40 on the Billboard charts. And his momentum hasn’t slowed since. On April 14, 2010, Wiz Khalifa released the critically acclaimed Kush and Orange Juice mixtape which quickly became a #1 trending topic on Twitter and Google trends. Outside of Wiz’s lyrical skill and achievements, his fans are truly a force to be reckoned with.
