Hello globalgrind it’s  @Kitapubdiva

I am from Louisville, Kentucky which is where the Kentucky Derby takes place, as a young girl growing up I called it having country swagger. I am a southern girl, but at the end of the day I grew up with two parents in a household.

My Mom and Dad were married at the young age of 17. My father never finished high school, my mother did but never went onto high education. Growing up and seeing some of my other family members continue the cycle of finishing high school then getting married and having kids, I knew this was something I didn’t want.

Growing up my mother always told me to have goals and dreams. When I was younger we would watch the “Wizard of Oz” or “Fame.” We would also sit and watch all the entertainment shows every year. I remember the big Grammy’s and getting to see Michael Jackson perform. When I would stay up and watch those type of shows I used to think, ‘oh my gosh if I could ever go to Hollywood one day and be apart of that.’

My family moved around a lot it was hard for me adjusting because I went to probably fifteen different schools until I got to high school. I got accepted into a Performing Art School, a Youth Performing Art School.

[pagebreak]While I was there I majored in dance. I can do dancing, ballet, and jazz but that wasn’t going to pay the bills. It’s the same high school that Nicole Scherzinger went to, we were in school together, she was two years younger than me.

My mother used to tell me you can be anything as long as you go to college. I knew that college was the only out for me. I knew college would be my saving grace, so people can call me a nerd all they want. For school I didn’t know anything about financial aid or keeping loans. All I knew was that my parents couldn’t afford to send me to college.

I knew I didn’t want to go to community school, so I ended up getting an academic scholarship to the University of Kentucky. Getting to go to school two hours away from home gave me the feeling of accomplishment but I’m telling you I didn’t understand a lot of stuff. I didn’t know what a credit hour was. I didn’t understand some of the things that might came natural to some people that come from black homes or established family categories. So, I fought hard to be honest, I fought hard to keep my scholarship to keep my grades up, I know that was the formula.

While I was in college I majored in journalism. I give that to my mother because she used to have us sit and watch the news everyday.

[pagebreak]We would watch Dane Rathers, I used to try to figure out why did she make us watch the news at home, and she used to ask us one thing we learned. I remember being young and wondering, ‘why am I watching news and not watching Coffee Shop?’ Talking is the only thing I probably knew how to do naturally.

After I was done with my undergraduate I ended up doing two internships. My internship ended up turning into my first job because I had the experience from interning after I graduated. That’s why I always stress to kids, as the advice for a career path, is to always to get an internship. Its an unpaid situation that’s priceless, it’s worth more than money.
