October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and in honor of it, Facebook is once again joining the cause, but in its own unique way.

Last year it was bras and this year it’s handbags, well, sort of. Male Facebook members have been going berserk over the recent status updates of their female friends stating what SEEMS to be where they like to get down and dirty. With titillating statuses like “I like it on the floor” and “I like it in my car,” what do you expect them to think? However, what these status updates are really saying is where these women like to place their handbags. Yeaaaaaaaaa… I know. It’s confusing.

I mean, I guess the idea is cute, but how much awareness is it really creating for the cause at hand? Yes, it unifies the women of the social network world and I guess provides a sense of female empowerment while leaving male friends excited, left out, and very confused. But aside from that, is it really doing anything else?

In a world where creativity sells, everyone from movie directors to singers and now I guess even those raising awareness for a disease are using viral marketing campaigns to spark curiosity and gain interest. I understand the bra color status updates from last year, because well, bras and breasts are related. However, I’m not sure where creators were going with this year’s idea.

What do handbags have to do with breasts? Is the point to get men to think about sex, which will then lead them to think about the female body, which will then lead them to eventually think about breasts, and then maybe, just maybe, lead them to make a connection to breast cancer? If I know the male race as well as I do, I’m almost 100% sure that their thought process ends at breasts and will most likely not make its way to the real issue here, which is CANCER. And if this campaign is not catered towards men as it seems to be, then I still don’t see the connection even as a woman!

I really don’t mean to sound cynical or downplay such an important cause. That’s not my intention, so please don’t misunderstand me. Although I have never known anyone affected by breast cancer, being a woman, it is a cause I obviously fully support and endorse. I am just a little confused, and wanted to express my confusion. And I am sure I’m not the only one.

However, I must admit that I do find extreme enjoyment in the fact that college boys all over America were probably going crazy with excitement when the innocent girl down the hall updated her status to “I like it on the dryer,” only to find out that it was for Breast Cancer Awareness and that she’s not really a closet freak. Better luck next time boys 😉
