TV on the Radio has canceled a number of shows following the death of its bassist, Gerard Smith.
Mr. Smith, 36, died on Wednesday morning of lung cancer, the band announced. Last month the band said that Mr. Smith had been diagnosed with cancer shortly after they had recorded the bands new album, “Nine Types of Light” (Interscope), which was released last week. Mr. Smith, a member of TV on the Radio since 2005, did not join the group for its current tour; last week at Radio City Music Hall, Jaleel Bunton, the band’s longtime drummer, played bass and keyboards, and Jahphet Landis sat in on drums.
According to a note on the band’s Web site, its show Wednesday in Detroit has been canceled, as well as upcoming shows in Chicago, Minneapolis and Denver.
