Despite the controversy regarding the NAACP, rocker Kid Rock went and accepted his award from the Black advocacy group. Kid Rock initally receieved criticism for being a NAACP “Great Expectations” candidate because of his use of the Confederate flag during his concerts.
The NAACP stuck to their guns and honored the rapper turned rocker and awarded him for his charitable donations to Detroit and The Red Cross. Over the years, Kid Rock has donated in excess of $100,000 to Detroit and The Red Cross relief fund.
During his speech, Kid Rock defended his use of the Confederate flag citing, “To me it just represents pride in southern rock’n’roll music, plus it just looks cool.” He further explained that it was a way to pay “homage” to his Southern rock idols Lynyrd Skynyrd. He ended his speech by saying, “I love America, I love Detroit and I love Black people.”
