American artist Cy Twombly, who pionered a form of graffiti in his large scale paintings, has died in Rome, reports AFP.

Twombly was 83 and suffered from cancer for many years.

Named after his father, who was nick-named after his favorite baseball pitcher, Cy Young, Cy studied at New York’s Art Student’s league after graduating from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.

He blurred the lines between drawing and painting, creating amazing masterpieces that incorporated drips and etchings on solid backgrounds on abstract and figurative canvases depicting roses. His skill was so profound that it is impossible to characterize Twombly as being part of a particular genre or school of art, save for clues offered in titles that referenced mythology or allegories.

At best he may be described a gestural painter who was interested in form and space.

After the break, samples of Twombly.
