What Happened: A 15-year-old is accused of beheading four men as a hired killer for a drug cartel, highlighting the pull of young people into organized crime. He was convicted on Tuesday and sentenced to three years in prison.
The arrest in December of the teenager, Edgar Jiménez Lugo, who went by the nickname “El Ponchis,” a reference to his pudgy build as a younger child, shocked the nation because of the gruesome nature of the crimes and his youth. He was 14 when the murders occurred.

Character: 63-Year-Old Man
Plot Line: A 63-year-old Glendale man was in stable condition Monday after he apparently attempted surgery on himself with a six-inch butter knife in an attempt to remove a protruding hernia from his stomach, police said.
The man, whose name wasn’t released, was taken just after 7:32 p.m. Sunday to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where he was treated for his injury, according to Glendale police.

Who: Rep. Luis Gutierrez
What Happened: Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) and 10 other immigration reform supporters were arrested in front of the White House on Tuesday for protesting against the Obama administration’s deportation of young people and families.
Gutierrez has been arrested for protesting twice before ― once, in the mid-1990s, against the bombing of Vieques, Puerto Rico, and again in 2010 against the Obama administration’s deportation record.

How They Hustled: Police are searching for a gunman who robbed a bank in a wheelchair disguise. The old man rolled into AmTrust Bank near Chandler Boulevard and 40th Street Tuesday morning, demanded money from a teller at gunpoint and made off with close to $70,000. “He had the women tape off the hands of the male employees,” says Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

What Happened: In Atlanta, Georgia, the XXVI Summer Olympiad is disrupted by the explosion of a nail-laden pipe bomb in Centennial Olympic Park. The bombing, which occurred during a free concert, killed a mother who had brought her daughter to hear the rock music and injured more than 100 others, including a Turkish cameraman who suffered a fatal heart attack after the blast.
