The MTV Video Music Awards proved not only to be an award show, but also an exhibition of memorable and bold costumes, from only the most daring artists.

Jessie J, LMFAO, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj took their creativity to the next level, with Katy wearing a yellow box headpiece by Stephen Jones, and Nicki walking the black carpet with a muzzle over her mouth.

What will they come up with next?

The Council Of Fashion Designers Of America recognized Lady Gaga’s style this year when she was honored as a Fashion Icon. When she accepted the award Gaga said, “Fashion made me feel like a star before I was.”

Although Lady Gaga morphed into Joe Calderone for the evening, during the pre-show she wore a slim red suit and signature Gaga platforms. Just when we thought we had seen it all, she continues to surprise us. To her growing array of talents, Gaga can now add actress to the list. Her stand out performance left both the audience and viewers at home shocked, intrigued, and exceedingly amused.

A common trend seen throughout the night was the use of color. Bold shades of red, pink, yellow, and green are among the most popular hues worn at the VMAs. The evening seemed to be somewhat of a game between the artists, competing for the title of the most outlandishly dressed star. The winner, we would say, is Nicki Minaj.

As the stars took the use of color to the next level, fans across the board can interpret their creativity and incorporate the use of color into their wardrobes. As always, drawing inspiration from stars like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry can give your style an added element it may need. Ladies, one way to use the color trend is by pairing a bright trouser with a t-shirt and boyfriend style blazer. This look suits men as well, but for a different version take pointers from Kanye West. His ombre collared shirt and jeans was a perfect use of monochromatic color, that was both effortless and sharp.
