Judging by V magazine’s new Winter 2011/2012 issue, the high fashion tome might as well have said eff off to Hollywood. After all, the publication passed up any famous celebs in favor of four model strewn covers.

STORY: Asian Girls On Top Make V Magazine Go Round & Round!

It’s the first time in over two years since V decided to feature models instead of celebrities on its covers and people are taking notice. Some critics and fans are even wondering if this move signals a return to the age of supermodels, a time when only models appeared on the cover of fashion magazines.

Quite a few people blame Vogue’s Anna Wintour for heralding the celeb craze, but the blame lies squarely on the reality TV colonization of the world.

Another interesting fact to note about the four very bright Terry Richardson shot covers of V, is the fact they feature a variety of ethnicities: Black, Asian, Muslim, Latinos and Europeans are all represented.

Candice Swanepoel and Joan Smalls share a cover, as do Daphne Groeneveld and Saskia de Brauw; Sui He and Hanaa Ben Abdesslem, and Bambi Northwood-Blyth and Lindsey Wixson, too.

Former French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld was the stylist of the issue and she said this to WWD as an explanation of why she cast the models:

“These eight girls are unique, not one is like the other. Candice is the only blonde and blue-eyed of this new generation of supermodels. Joan is black, Sui He is Asian, Hanna is North African. It’s their diversity that makes each of them, to me, truly modern. They bring a new energy to fashion.”

About whether there will be a return to models-only magazine covers, Roitfeld explained:

“It’s a big moment of change in fashion. In some cases, you feel like it’s the end or an era. I have been feeling this with cover subjects, and especially models.”

We couldn’t agree more! Lets hope it sticks this time.
