Santorum dropped out of the Presidential election for the Republican nomination, which leaves Mitt Romney as the leading candidate for the Republican nomination.

Santorum opened the news conference explaining that the campaign had a tough weekend with his daughter Bella being sick:

“We had a difficult weekend.. with our daughter Bella.. It did pause us to think…”

Santorum said Bella “is a fighter and doing extraordinarily well,” but that it led him to reevaluate his campaign.

In his final words to the room of reporters Santorum said:

“Unfortunately this race is over for me, and we will suspend this campaign effective today.”

Santorum continued, saying that the fight isn’t over:

“While this campaign is over for me, and we will suspend our campaign as of today, we are not done fighting.”

As for Romney, he congratulated Santorum on his campaign and called him an “able and worthy” competitor.

Santorum ran a good race and stuck in there until the very end. Happy trails!
