Mushatte was born four years before the Wright brothers made their first flight, and she credits her longevity to God and clean living, saying, “I thank the Lord for the love I receive from family,” during her birthday party at the Vandalia Senior Center in Brooklyn.
“I’m tired, sleepy, but I’m all right,” said Jones, who wore a white straw hat, a long floral dress and lime-green cardigan to her birthday bash.
She said all she really wanted as a gift was a new pair of bedroom slippers. When you get that old, birthday gifts aren’t a big deal anymore.
She’s the 16th-oldest person in the world. The oldest known person on the planet is Besse Cooper of Georgia, who will turn 116 on Aug. 26.
Born in Alabama on July 6, 1899, “Miss Susie” moved to New York in 1923 when John Hylan was mayor and the cost of a subway ride was a nickel.
She worked as a child-care provider until retiring in 1965.
She was married once, but it didn’t last long, and she has no kids, but a lot of nieces and nephews who shower her with love.
“Whatever she’s eating, I’m going to eat,” said City Councilman Charles Barron, who was on hand to celebrate with Jones. “Whatever she’s thinking, I’m going to think. I’ll do whatever it takes to get to 113 years!”
It seems the key to Jones’ long life is no kids! Just saying. Happy Birthday to Ms. Jones.
