Jill Scott always looks beautiful. The Philadelphia-born singer/actress has managed to keep her wholesome image for the entire length of her long career and the October 2012 cover of Essence is no different.
The cover proclaims that “Black Is Beautiful” and features Jill in all black, paired with a statement piece crystal necklace and a hairstyle that honestly shocked us.

Jill has cut the majority of her hair off, opting for a short-cropped look for the cover of the magazine.
Jill explained her look by saying:
“This is the simplest form of myself. I look in the mirror and it’s like, ‘Hey, there you go. What’s up, girl?’ For me, hair is an accoutrement. Hair is jewelry. It’s an accessory. Tomorrow I may want a wig down to my butt and I’m gonna rock it, and the next day I may want a big Afro and I’m gonna rock that too…”
