Founded by Cristobal Balenciaga in 1919, Balenciaga managed to thrive well into the 1960s, when for a variety of reasons, the brand began to falter. Although it was still respected as a luxury name, it wasn’t until 1997 when Nicolas Ghesquiere took over as creative director that the brand got back its luster and began to thrive once again.

Between celebrities like Kristen Stewart constantly donning pieces from the brand each season and the re-gaining of its cult following, it was a shocker to everyone when Nicolas Ghesquiere announced that he would be leaving the brand without giving much of an explanation as to why.

Although Balenciaga never released a statement, we can always count on Uncle Karl [Lagerfeld] to put in his two cents.

Since Balenciaga suggested the designer was longing for a new creative adventure, Karl expressed his thoughts on Nicolas possibly making the move to the LVMH group in a recent interview with Reuters.

“Perhaps Nicolas wants to have his own label, which is not a bad idea, and it would not be a bad idea if somebody such as Bernard Arnault would invest in a new label because there are so many old labels (within the LVMH group).”

For those of you who don’t know, Bernard Arnault is only the chief executive officer of the world’s biggest luxury group, LVMH. Karl Lagerfeld runs his own brand on top of working as artistic director for LVMH’s Fendi and for the privately owned Chanel brand. He obviously isn’t accustomed to not having any work on his plate.

For now we say, give Nicolas a break! He helped Balenciaga for 15 years – it’s time for a vacation.
