GlobalGrind’s financial coach, Lynn Richardson, had a lively conversation with one of her mentors, internationally renowned author and motivational speaker, Les Brown, and here’s what he had to say.

GG:  Les, even though you’re one of the greatest speakers in the world, you unlike others, often share the stage with up and coming artists.  This sometimes results in them, instead of you, getting the next gig.  Why do you spend so much time helping others when you could make the money yourself?

Les:  If you want to get where you want to go in life, you have to help others get where they want to go.  I don’t believe other speakers are my competition, I mean if their good, their good.  It won’t hurt THEM if I “hide” them from the world, it will only hurt ME.  Why?  Because I can learn something from another speaker.    No matter how much energy I could put into trying to keep someone else from getting their due accolades, cream will always rise to the top.  So I choose to be a part of their success.  Besides, when it comes to money, you’re your only competition.  When you do your best, study your audience, read to gain knowledge about your speaking topic, and deliver the message God has given with all of your heart and soul, then the money will come and no one, I mean no one, can duplicate you.  So each and every one of us has a responsibility to be excellent.  The other reason I choose to help other speakers is because of this simple fact: they have a unique message that the world needs to hear.  I’m not the only one!  In the Bible, there are many prophets, not just one.  In a school, there are many teachers, not just one.  In this world, there are many gifted speakers and artists who have something very valuable to give back to the world.  That’s why I do what I do.  That’s why I helped you, Lynn.  I mean do you know how much power you have in the financial world and in ministry?  I knew you were a natural born star when I heard you speak and when I saw the entire audience mesmerized under the sound of your voice at MY event.  I think they wanted you more than me!!  (laughter)  That’s why I will continue to seek out and develop gifted speakers who have a transformational message for the world.
