After decades of the U.S. prison population being largely comprised of minorities, a new report is showing that the demographic is changing.

DETAILS: Say What?! NYPD Uses “Stop-And-Frisk” Procedure On Mostly Blacks & Hispanics!

The Sentencing Project reveals that for the past two decades, prison trends show a decline in incarceration of Black people in America. In fact, from 2000 to 2009, the incarceration rate of White men rose about 8.5 percent and white women 47 percent!

On the other end of the spectrum, incarceration of Black men fell by 9.8 percent, and for Black woman, 30.7 percent.

But what’s up with that drastic change?

According to Gawker:

The report points to factors including: falling crime rates; changes in drug sentencing laws and mandatory sentencing; changes in the types of crimes being committed by different demographics; and socioeconomic changes.

It must be noted, however, that although incarceration rates have gone down for both Black men and women, America’s mass incarceration still remains five times the rate it was in 1970.

Wow! There’s still a lot of work to be done. Race aside, something must be said for America’s high incarceration rates.
