If you follow one of hip-hop’s most iconic stylists, June Ambrose, then you know the style maven has no reservations when it comes to giving an inside look at her life as not just a stylist, but as a mommy. And she does it all without losing her stylish flair for the eccentric.

Role reversal came for June’s closet space, when she was selected by fashion website The Coveteur to show the world what her closet was working with.

As expected, June’s closet was filled to the ceiling – literally – with red bottoms and the finest of the fine Prada purses.

As the camera sifted through all of June’s most fashionable finds, she spoke about her start in the music industry as a stylist and what exactly her ’90s video-styling was a reflection of.

What her shoes would say if they could talk:

If my shoes could talk I’m pretty sure they would say: ‘I want to dance with somebody; I want to feel the heat with somebody. We are the sole of fashion.’

On her obsession with Prada:

My Prada obsession goes back many years. Miuccia has a way of making something old look new. I love the vintage high fashion aesthetic and I tend to use them more in editorial that music videos. They tell a better story in print and on the streets.

On her styling for music videos in the nineties:

I have to admit I was out of my mind in the nineties when I was styling some of today’s most iconic music videos. Missy Elliot, Puffy, Busta Rhymes, R. Kelly and Jay-Z were among the brave who gave me creative freedom to do whatever I wanted.

On her obsession with sunglasses:

I was born in frames. I started collecting vintage ones in junior high school; it was my version of make up for when I was too young to wear it but needed something to upstage my face when I had problem skin. For me, the more eccentric the better. My grandmother used to wear Pucci and Portobello frames that I kidnapped and I recently designed my own collection with Selima Optiques. It was the most organic collaboration ever. Eyewear has even become a signature in my music videos, people would look at my work and say June Ambrose did that. I made a super dupa fly mark with Missy Elliot when I put her in a pair of now iconic rear fire flare frames by Alain Mikli.

On her new shoe line with HSN:

My collection “Disco Paradise,” is the perfect balance between fashion and function. I wanted my shoes to be easy to wear so most of my collection is designed with a single sole that makes you feel like you’re wearing the height of a tall pump when really, you’re walking around in my sturdy architectural heels or wedges. For additional comfort, all of my shoes are designed with a cushion at the base of the shoe for pounding the pavement with ease. Each shoe is designed to help reinvent those classic and basic pieces in your wardrobe with adventurous patterns (on your free!). Perfect for day to night, the bold textiles and metallic trims are not only strategically placed but are also appropriate to wear to the work place or… onto the dance floor! I’m from the Caribbean and I love to dance so I was inspired by the Caribbean paradise and the idea of bringing disco to the day time, all with a timeless sophisticated approach. There’s just something about mixing textures with tropical prints and bold metallics that brings out the wild disco queen in all of us!
