With photos of the Sandy Hook Elementary School gunman Adam Lanza scarce, it was a suprise today when his school identification card was released to the public.

In the eerie photo, a 16-year-old Lanza stares, eyes wide open, into the camera. His built is gaunt and his emotionless expression evokes the same chilling feeling his other photos give off.

CBS obtained the school records from Western Connecticut State University, where he went for a brief period of time.

In the records, Lanza was asked if he was male or female, to which he replied “I choose not to answer.” When asked to describe himself, he gave the same response.

Lanza attended the college after leaving Newtown High School when he was 16. There, he earned a decent 3.26 grade-point-average — including an A in a computer class and an A-minus in American history — before leaving the school for a stint at community college. An instructor at WCSU recalled that Lanza was very quiet and didn’t fit in, though at the time, he was a few years younger than his peers.

Just recently, warrant records that were released show that items recovered from Lanza’s home included pictures of dead, bloody people, guns, military uniforms and a book detailing Asperger’s Syndrome.

As more and more details come to light, Lanza’s story becomes clearer and more frightening.
