Selena Gomez expressed a lot of nervousness about her return to the stage for the MTV Movie Awards to perform her new hit “Come and Get It.” But at the end of it all, she delivered a well-choreographed performance dressed in her rendition of traditional Bollywood-inspired garb, complete with a bindi on her forehead.

Apparently, what Selena thought would be fun festive clothing for a sexy performance, offended a few who are now seeking an apology for ‘cultural appropriation.’

Leader of the Universal Society of Hinduism, Rajan Zed, is seeking an apology from the triple threat with the following explanation:

“The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance. It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol. It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed. Selena should apologize and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions.”

It’s unfortunate that Selena’s outfit stirred up such a controversy, because her Bollywood-inspired outfit was stellar, but maybe she should have skipped on the bindi.
