We were eating rubber and didn’t even know it.
Subway announced this week that it will stop using the chemical azodicarbonamide in its bread. The sandwich company came under fire after a food blogger planned a petition to boycott the company unless they used healthier ingredients. In a week, the petition garnered over 60,00 signatures. Subway claims that the process was already in the works before the petition started.
“The complete conversion to have this product out of the bread will be done soon,” Subway said in a statement, without providing further details.
Azodicarbonamide is a chemical approved by the USDA to use in foods. It is often used as an additive in shoe rubber, and foamed plastic like yoga and gym mats. Europe and Australia have banned the chemical from being used in their food after discovering that it could bring on asthma and allergies.
It’s not known when the chemical will be removed, but let’s just say they need to get on that ASAP.
