2014 is gearing up to be a big year for actress Scarlett Johansson! Early in the year ScarJo garnered major buzz for her role in Spike Jonze’s award winning film Her and it’s been all uphill from there. She’s currently preparing to begin filming for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, has another film in the works and oh, yeah – she’s also got a baby on the way! Johansson recently sat down with The Wall Street Journal to discuss her next big career moves, balancing her hectic career with her growing family and more!

At the time of her interview ScarJo was fresh off the success of Her, Spike Jonze’s romantic film about a man who falls in love with an operating system. Though she was never actually physically in the film, her role as Samantha is perhaps the most noted of her lengthy career which is saying a lot since she’s pretty much done it all. Johansson’s worked with big names like Robert Redford, Sofia Coppola, Woody Allen, the Coen Brother and Spike Jonze. She’s also won a Tony Award for her work on Broadway. So what could she possibly still have left to accomplish? Landing a role in a major blockbuster, of course!

According to the new mommy-to-be, after seeing Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow in Iron Man, she set her sights on similar roles.

“I was like, I want to be part of something big like that,” she said. “I want to be in a really successful, huge film that’s good and works.”

“I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it,” she added. ” I wanted to stretch myself physically, out of my comfort zone, and still succeed. I’m probably like most actors. We have huge egos, and you want to know you can be successful, not matter what. I don’t want to be pigeonholed in one genre or budget or whatever.”

Her wish was granted in 2010 when she graced the silver screen in Iron Man 2 as Natasha Romanoff, better known as Black Widow. Naturally she was a hit! Her character took to the big screen again in Avengers starring alongside Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans. Once again, the film took off and before she knew it she was locked in for the latest Captain America movie Captian America: The Winter Soldier.

“I don’t think anybody could have predicted how successful it would be,” she said. “It was bananas. Totally bananas.”

Her role in these big-budget action movies has not only made her more versatile as an actress, but broadened her audience.

“My friends’ kids are way more into me than they were before,” she told The Wall Street Journal. “I don’t think they were even allowed to see half the movies I’m in. And now, kids are like, ‘Does Captain America have a sister?’ All these questions. ‘Who would win a fight between…’ I get a lot of that.”

Between shooting the Captain America sequel Johansson says she’s been busy working on another project, an indie film titled Under the Skin. The movie is directed by Jonathon Glazer and is said to be about an alien, played by Scarlett, who preys on men in the UK.

There are some obvious differences between Johansson’s role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and her work in Under the Skin and that’s just how she likes it! Scarlett says she’s not interested in ever working in just one genre.

“I’d rather take the chance of a film not working than be stuck in a pattern of making the same movie over and over,” she said. “That part I’m happy about. It’s nice to be glamorous, but I don’t want to always have to be trendy and glamorous and an object of desire. I don’t want to be stuck in that forever. Because it doesn’t last.”

Amid all this filming, it recently came to light that Scarlett and her fiance Romain Dauriac are expecting their first child together! While this news is exciting, Scarlett knows it wont be easy to balance her home life and career – but she’s got a pretty good plan for tackling both!

“There must exist a world in which I can balance those things, be able to raise a family and still make a film a year, or work on my own, develop things, do theater. I want to be able to have it all,” she joked. “Selfishly.”

“I know that with that there will be some sacrifices. I know that’s the struggle with working mothers and successful careers. It happens,” she said. “With male actors it just doesn’t happen that way. You can be every woman’s fantasy, and nobody thinks twice about the fact that you have eight kids or whatever.”
