On Saturday, May 3rd, 2014, the number one pound-for-pound fighter Floyd “Money” Mayweather (45-0, 26 KOs) will be facing the hard-hitting Marcos “El Chino” Maidana (35-3, 31 KOs) in a 12-round world championship unification bout (WBA and WBC welterweight titles) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayweather has built his legacy on going up against some of the most aggressive, power-punching opponents (Hatton, Alvarez, etc.), dominating bouts with his speed, accuracy, counterpunching, and quick-fire combinations. Mayweather’s proven ability to adapt, outbox and frustrate his opponents proves why he’s a favorite going into this Saturday’s match.
But what does that mean for Maidana? Well, boxing’s built on underdogs fighting their way to the top. This may not be the Hollywood Rocky story, but a lot of heart could make a difference. What Maidana lacks in speed and accuracy, he very well makes up for with power, a strong chin, and determination. Against a quicker and more agile Adrien Broner, who sports a similar style to Mayweather, Maidana demonstrated in the early rounds that he’s ready for that next level, out-hustling Broner until the final seconds.

Mayweather may be an obvious choice any day of the week, but Maidana is a great fighter with a long resume of not only defeating, but humbling his opponents (ask Adrien Broner).
