It’s hard out here for a Kardashian. Yeah, we heard you scoff from all the way behind your computer screen just now. According to Kendall Jenner, it really is, though. But she isn’t really a Kardashian—she’s a Jenner, someone in a comment section somewhere will cry out. That’s really a tomato-tomato thing here.
Sure, the model of the moment has a gold-medal-winning Olympian for a father, but we all know her real claim to fame is Keeping Up with the Kardashians, something she says hasn’t helped her modeling career at all. According to her cover story for LOVE magazine, which has yet to be released online, she says:
“I was like, ‘You know what? I want to be high fashion. I want to be taken seriously … People think that this [success] just came to me. But it didn’t. What I have has almost worked against me. I had to work even harder to get where I wanted because people didn’t take me seriously as a model. Because of the TV show,” she adds needlessly. “I went on castings and some people weren’t feeling me because of my name. But it was great when people didn’t recognize me. I was like, ‘Thank you. Please don’t recognize me.'”
We now know Kendall can stand on her own two feet on the runway and outside the realm of reality TV–but it definitely doesn’t hurt to have Riccardo Tisci and other fashion folk as friends of the family. She does, however, try to distance herself from the Kardashian klan, going so far as to not let her big sis Kim watch her walk:
“Kim was invited to a lot of the shows that I was in,” she says. “She called me before and was like, ‘Hey, I was invited to the show, I just wanted to let you know. Do you want me to come?’ and I was like, ‘No.'”
Welp.
