Music won’t be going up on a Tuesday anymore.
In an effort to combat poor album sales, music industry execs are reportedly moving album release dates in the U.S. from Tuesday to Friday.
In other regions of the world, music releases are on various days throughout the week. In the U.K. releases are typically on Mondays, and in Germany, all new music is released on Fridays. Recent studies have proven that album sales are higher on Fridays and Saturdays than earlier in the week, which correlates with consumer pay periods.
“Martin Millis, founder of Beggar’s Group (which includes XL Recordings, 4AD and more), fears the move will “lead to a market in which the mainstream dominates, and the niche, which can be tomorrow’s mainstream, is further marginalised.”
Don’t know if a change in release dates will combat illegal downloading, but hey, it’s worth a try.
