The UN’s police, UNPOL, is supposed to mentor the Timorese police force. But watch as UNPOL stood by while their protégés beat this man, whose only crime was to hold out a placard that reads "Fishing Group from Maunroni Village". This incidence occurred in Atauro where the President of Timor-Leste, Noble Laureate for Peace, Dr. Jose Ramos-Horta, had organised an international fishing competition. Police brutality such as this is widespread and the Timor-Leste government, headed by Xanana Gusmão, who is also the minister in charge of the police force, have repeatedly played down incidence such as this. The UN is also full of praise for itself for the job they supposedly have done in training and establishing a "professional" police force, the PNTL. Now you can see for yourself what kind of police force and police culture the UN, through UNPOL, is encouraging in Timor-Leste.
