Authorities in southwestern Illinois have arrested two people in connection with the shooting death of the mayor of Washington Park, John Thornton.

Washington Park Police Detective Kim McAfee says 52-year-old John Thornton was shot twice in the chest at close range in his car early Thursday. He died later at a hospital.

McAfee says the shooter was in the car with Thornton when he was shot. The car then crashed into a tree, and witnesses say the shooter limped to a waiting car and fled.

McAfee says one of the two people arrested was the driver of the getaway car. It isn’t clear if the second person in custody is the shooter. Police say no charges have been filed yet.
