REWIND: Square Biz by Teena Marie
We are still in disbelief at the passing of soul singer Teena Marie. Also known as Lady Tee, The Ivory Queen of Soul and Vanilla Child, she signed with well known soul label Motown in 1976. She quickly caught the eye of soul-funk star Rick James who eventually became her beau but initially helped her score her first top ten hit with “I’m Just a Sucker for Your Love.” By the time Teena reached the third of her 13 album career, she was doing all of her own songwriting and producing, even writing the arrangements for her horn and rhythm sections, proving she had what it took to be a pop-soul icon in her own right.
Our favorite track that shows Teena Marie’s voice, attitude and the all out talent of her 34 year career was released in 1981 on the “It Must Be Magic” album. This is when Ronald Reagan had just become President, researchers found the sunken Titanic, boxer Muhammad Ali retired, Lady Di and Prince Charles got married, we saw the first Post-It Notes and we heard on the radio, “Square Biz,” our stupidDOPE REWIND.
