Aaron Alexis navy yard shooter photos

Authorities investigating the Navy Yard massacre made a grim discovery when they noticed weird carvings on gunman Aaron Alexis’ firearm.

Before killing 12 people on Monday morning, he carved the phrases “Better off this way” and “My ELF weapon” on the stock of his shotgun, but investigators are still puzzled as to what that means in regards to his rampage.

According to the Washington Post, ELF generally stands for “extremely low frequency” and can refer to weather or communications efforts, among other things.

If you recall, Alexis complained to Rhode Island police in August about hearing the voices of three people who had been sent to follow him and were sending him vibrations through “some sort of microwave machine.”

The gunman, who was battling mental health issues, could have believed that his “ELF,” or gun, would protect him.

Now investigators are trying to figure out how a man with mental health issues and a past with gun violence could gain clearance to the military installation and clearance to buy a weapon.

Police in Rhode Island said they had no reason to arrest Alexis, or to put him under observation, after he told them about the voices. They said such run-ins are a common occurrence.

The investigation is ongoing.
